Level Up Your Skincare Routine with These Ingestible Supplements

I have recently adopted a new philosophy in which I add to my diet rather than subtract from it. Instead of restricting myself, I now simply eat more vegetables, have increased my fiber intake and add a wellness supplement to my morning coffee or smoothie.

Supplements, my dear Watson. Call me vain, but all I want is for my skin to glow and hair to shine. We are lucky to live in a time period where antioxidant-filled sachets are so accessible to us. We can now quite literally eat our way to pretty. According Euromonitor International, the beauty supplement market accounts for $89.6 million in U.S. sales. Stores like Sephora and Nordstrom have upped the ante by selling a variety of ingestible beauty products on top of their traditional beauty offerings.

At times it feels a little gung-ho, but good skin really does start from within. While we are (obviously) firm believers in high quality skincare, it is important to supply your body with the nutrients it needs.

Plus, doing something every day like incorporating a morning supplement is a great grounding ritual. Yes, my life is falling apart, but you better believe I stuck to my routine. Adding in a daily supplement also helps you develop the healthiest superiority complex. The same one I already have from flossing daily. Thanks to flossing, I am now better than the average American without having to do something that requires real work, like training for the Olympics.

The best part about working in the beauty industry is that the people around you feed into your wellness obsession rather than mock it. As a result, I have been egged on to try a ridiculous amount of products. Keep scrolling for seven of my favorite beauty supplements.

Original Golde, $29 | Sephora
1

My Saturday morning ritual typically involves a SoulCycle class and a turmeric latte made with Golde’s original blend. I realize that I sound like someone you would write a snooty generational think piece about, but I am perfectly okay with that.

I asked Trinity Wofford, Golde’s CEO, why she started the brand, to which she replied: “I’m big on ingestible beauty because so much of what shows up in your skin actually starts within, whether that’s from diet or stress exposure. I start every morning with Golde’s Original Turmeric Tonic — not only does it taste yummy, but the anti-inflammatory properties are great for boosting my glow and taming any bloat. When you allow your rituals to work together, there’s an incredible harmony within the body that becomes visible on the outside too.”

Benefits: skin glow (turmeric), immunity boost (ginger), workout recovery (cinnamon).

I am a fiend for this superpowder. It tastes just like sweet Tang, so bonus points for the nostalgia. The editorial team is currently in the midst of a water drinking challenge, and this is my secret weapon. I now enjoy chugging large amounts of water because GoopGlow makes it taste so good. Drinking water infused with antioxidants has deluded me into thinking that I am a put-together Gwyneth myself.

Benefits: supports collagen production (vitamin C), protects skin from the damaging effects of solar radiation (vitamin E), fights UV light damage (lutein and zeaxanthin), glowing skin (grape-seed proanthocyanidins).

Moon Juice Beauty Dust Sachet Box, $35 | Saks Fifth Avenue

The title appeals to my insecurities and for that reason, I am sold. The tart berry flavor makes it the perfect addition to your morning smoothie, matcha tea or lemonade.

Benefits: protects the skin from oxidative stress (amla), hydrates and promotes skin clarity (schisandra), nourishes and calms the skin (goji), reduces the impact of stress on accelerated aging (ashwagandha).

Aime Matcha Glow, $30 | Modesens

With a tagline that reads “all we need is love (and good skin),” there is no question as to why I ordered these. These sachets are an effortless way to get in your daily antioxidants. Plus, matcha tastes great and pairs perfectly with oat milk. Each packet contains 10g of marine collagen, which is easily digested by the body. It is better to ingest collagen, rather than apply it topically because the molecules are often too large to penetrate the skin.

Benefits: improved hair, nails, skin texture/elasticity and joints (marine collagen), reduced inflammation (Aloe vera juice powder).

Rooted Shots Orange Strawberry, $35 | Rooted Shots

I have never been able to figure out if it is okay to drink EmergenC daily. (I love the taste but do not love the long list of hard-to-pronounce ingredients.) Bring in the Rooted Shots (bet you never heard that line screamed at a party). It is the organic upgrade to a popular health additive. With no refined sugars and 500 mg of vitamin C in each sachet, there is a new way to boost our immune systems.

Chris Douglass, cofounder of Rooted Shots, says, “Powdered supplements are important because they offer wellness on-the-go. I love fresh juice shots, but they can be expensive and often require a lot of money and time. Giving people convenient, dried plant-based wellness solutions like Rooted Shots allows them to get the flavors, vitamins, nutrients and health benefits they seek from a juice shot — even if they are stuck at their desk, or on a plane, or can’t leave their house. And the great thing about superfoods like ginger and turmeric is that they are still incredibly good for you even when they’re dried.”

Benefits: immune system boost (strawberry, orange, citric acid, ascorbic acid).

Equi London Beauty Formula, $66 | Net-A-Porter

“Blame it on my hormones!!!” I say every month. I started taking this beauty formula because the adaptogenic herbs and vitamin B6 keep my hormone levels balanced, which in turn helps prevent stress-related flare-ups. This powder can easily be added to water, coffee, tea or smoothies. My time of the month routine typically involves watching “Call Me By Your Name” for the 12th time, Sunday Riley U.F.O. Oil, chocolate-covered graham crackers and Equi London’s Beauty Formula.

Benefits: improved skin radiance (hyaluronic acid), aided absorption of nutrients (probiotics), a clear youthful complexion (marine collagen, zinc, silica, resveratrol).

Wylde One Immune Shrooms Adaptogenic Elixir, $36 | Anthropologie

Five points for the packaging alone! These adaptogenic elixirs are perfect for those of you who need a midday memory-boosting energy push. I actually drank a packet of Brain Buzz this morning to crank this piece out. It really helps me get in the zone when it is time to put my creative hat on. (Figuratively, of course, although it would be nice to wear a hat to signify that am writing so no one bothers me.) It tastes slightly bitter, but I am able to ignore that fact in the name of productivity.

Benefits: improved memory (lion’s mane mushroom extract), reduced anxiety (Gotu kola extract), sustained physical performance (Rhodiola extract), improved mood (Ginkgo biloba extract).
