You made your list, you checked it twice — and you blinked, and the holidays came and passed. As you’re eyeing down the start of a new lap around the sun, you may be thinking about new goals, aspirations, and those ever-enticing resolutions. While you can begin goals on any date, if the first week of January gives you the motivation to put down TikTok and clean up your lifestyle, use that energy to your advantage. And better yet: Consider pairing your new workout and wellness regimen with your zodiac sign.
Though, of course, you don’t need the stars to tell you how to break a sweat, the time, date, and place we were born do provide insight into our strongest (and weakest) body parts and where we feel our best. Whether it’s swimming and rocking climbing, running or boxing, we spoke with two astrologers to provide the best advice for setting fitness, health and wellness goals for each sign.
Meet the Experts
Lauren DeGolia is an astrologist and clarity consultant.
Ms. IGee is a spirituality expert at Higher Vibes Online.
Aries
Focus on consistency.
Aries is ruled by the planet Mars, which is known as the planet of assertiveness. This means you would do well to have ambitious wellness goals this year, according to astrologist and clarity consultant Lauren DeGolia. To set yourself up for success, she recommends creating consistency by harnessing your Aries fire to fuel workouts, adventures, and health habits. “Around Spring Equinox in March, take a timeout to rest, reassess your goals, and celebrate your victories,” she continues. “Aries has a way of not knowing when to stop, and your health is too important to reach burnout. Listening to your body and its needs is key to achieving your goals all year long.”
Best workouts for Aries:
According to Ms. IGee of Higher Vibes Online, a spirituality expert, “The naturally introverted Aries will do well in solo sports and activities where they are either alone or in the lead. Conducting group exercise classes, instructing or attending yoga, golf, and meditation are very good to calm this naturally fiery sign.”
Taurus
Take extra time outside.
Stubborn and motivated, DeGolia says this powerful bull doesn’t do well if they feel stuck in a routine. You need to keep things fresh to maintain your interest, so consider trying different workout classes and videos to keep it fresh. Also, since fresh air and open spaces make you feel energized and grounded, schedule time for outdoor adventures, like hiking, running, or even boot camp classes in a park. “If you’re the kind of Taurus that has a hard time getting started building a new habit, try taking one small baby step in the direction of your wellness dreams,” she continues. “Taurus energy is ruled by the planet Venus so make sure you’re focused on workouts you love.”
Best workouts for Taurus:
Ms.IGee says, “Taurus’ best fitness plan would be running because this may be the only thing to quiet the always-talkative Taurian. Taurus, the bull of the zodiac, loves comfort and this type of activity would not only challenge but would also get them engaged in the outdoors that they crave yet avoid due to their fear of not being comfortable.”
Gemini
Enlist a workout buddy.
You’re social, vibrant, and magnetic, Gemini. And that means when it comes to fitness (or really anything), you can’t — and don’t want to! — keep it to yourself. You also enjoy learning about health, wellness, and fitness, so the more you study and investigate (even if it’s on TikTok), the more inspired you’ll become. This year, DeGolia suggests finding an accountability/fitness buddy to ensure you stay the course — and track your progress four weeks at a time. When you see results, it’ll help you maintain consistency. “Mercury rules Gemini energy, the planet of communication, so try not to overthink things,” she adds.
Best workouts for Gemini:
Ms. IGee says: “As Gemini is one of the most social signs, they don’t enjoy being alone, so this sign does great in team sports. Their mental sharpness allows them to engage in highly-competitive sports such as baseball and football, tennis, and weightlifting.”
Cancer
Prioritize yourself.
In truth, you don’t need us to tell you to take a rest day from your workout routine. However, you may need a gentle nudge to stop putting everyone else’s priorities ahead of your own. In practice, this might look like saying ‘no’ to a boot camp with a friend because you’re sore from the weekend’s running trips. Rather than worrying about disappointing others, DeGolia suggests trusting your intuition. “If you’re a Cancer that prioritizes everyone else around you, make sure to take some time out to nurture your soul and your wellness goals,” she says. “You can’t take care of others from an empty cup.” It’s also worth noting that Cancer energy is ruled by the moon, which means learning how the moon influences your productivity and workouts could be life-changing, she adds.
Best workouts for Cancer:
Ms.IGee says, “Being that the Cancerian can let their emotions get the best of them, an outlet like martial arts or kickboxing mixed with meditation would be a great fit for their sometimes over-the-top and erratic nature. Things that strengthen their core would also benefit them due to their high anxiety affecting this area.”
Leo
Find balance — and rewards.
You’re the sign that loves the finer things in life — you are a magnificent lion, after all! Since shining your light is something that comes easily to you, the center stage is where you feel the most comfortable. Particularly if you can show off your recent athleisure shopping haul. To help you stay focused, DeGolia says to set monthly fitness and wellness goals for yourself, and when you reach them, reward yourself with a new outfit, pair of kicks, or some new self-care swag to keep you on track. Remember, though: you don’t (and can’t) do it all. “Your sign is ruled by the sun, which means that when things get overheated, it’s best to rest and reassess,” she warns. “Balance is the key to mind-blowing success this year.”
Best workouts for Leo:
Ms. IGee says, “The Leo’s best course of action to stay in shape would be a form of dance, and with their love of music, this activity could provide them with the perfect way to express their creative and athletic nature.”
Virgo
Be kind to yourself.
No one is harder on you than yourself, perfectionist Virgo! When you make goals for yourself, you create spreadsheets, calendar invites, and benchmarks for success. No matter what it is, you get it done — but not without much criticism and analysis. DeGolia encourages busy-body Virgos to remember one step forward is all you need to focus on. You want to be the best, but really, it’s about making progress. “The planet Mercury rules Virgo energy, the planet of intellect which is why you’re always looking for the smartest way to achieve your fitness goals,” she says. “This year, instead of opting for an overdone workout program, try keeping it simple and watch your results materialize faster.”
Best workout for Virgo:
Ms. IGee says, “Yoga and meditation would help to quiet their erratic thinking that is probably due to being in their head so much.”
Libra
Document your progress.
Calm-natured, peace-focused, and zen, DeGolia encourages Libras to step out of their comfort zone this year and try a new wellness trend they’ve been curious about. Maybe you want to give Whole30 a try? Or commit to a daily yoga practice? See what 75 Hard is all about? Whatever you pick, make sure you grab a new journal or camera and document your journey. Not only will this help you stay focused, but you may inspire others along the ride. “Venus rules Libra energy, the planet of love, which means that part of finding balance in your fitness routines could be reassessed if you’re enjoying what you’ve committed to,” she says. “If you find yourself in a rut or not achieving the results you’re hoping for, give yourself permission to pivot.”
Best workout for Libra:
Ms. IGee says, “The Libra’s natural need for justice and equality would excel in sports with a team lead and cooperation. Think: group exercise or even team sports. Signing up for a kickball league, tennis league, or similar would help this sign stay motivated in their fitness routine.”
Scorpio
Keep your goals where you can see them.
Believe it or not, Scorpio, your superpower is focus. But you really only give your attention to those things that make you feel passionate and alive. DeGolia encourages the scorpion to spend extra time on the things that make you feel best this year: mind, body, and soul. Since Scorpio energy is ruled by the planet Pluto, which welcomes transformation through passion and healing, the more you pay attention to how you feel, the better you’ll meet your aspirations. And better yet: You will be encouraged to go after them if you see them. So hang up a manifestation board where you can be reminded daily. “If you feel uninspired throughout the year, tap back into why you committed to your goals in the first place and clean up any dense energy lingering around,” she adds.
Best workout for Scorpio:
Ms. IGee says, “Scorpios’ intense nature makes them great sports trainers because they will push you to your max. They would also excel at HIIT routines, boxing, and other workouts that match their intensity and can therefore get them out of their heads.”
Sagittarius
Commit to one thing at one time.
When Sagittarius dreams big — they reach the sky, the universe, and all of the galaxies. While you may have out-of-this-world fitness goals, you likely will lose steam quickly if you try to do too many things at once. You can begin by tapping into something fresh and exciting, which will make you feel pumped. “If you’re feeling extra adventurous this year, Sag, learn a new dance move or incorporate a new wellness ritual —pretty much anything, just outside your comfort zone,” DeGolia says. “The planet Jupiter rules Sagittarius energy, the planet of expansion, which means reassessing what you’re capable of is an important part of your fitness growth this year.”
Best workout for Sagittarius:
Ms.IGee says, “The Sagittarius loves adventure and enjoys being alone simultaneously. Hiking, rock climbing, and other sports that will give Sag the adrenaline they crave would benefit them for a long life of mental and physical fitness.”
Capricorn
Figure out what’s most important.
You want to climb Mount Everest one day. Also, you want to run the New York City Marathon. And if you can qualify (and you know you can), the Boston Marathon, too. You also want to start a podcast about going paleo. Maybe become a TikTok sensation. As much as you can be overeager and ambitious, Capricorn, DeGolia says to try to remind yourself that quality is better than quantity. “Too much effort doesn’t always yield the best results, so don’t let your high standards slow you down,” she says. “Keep your ambitious nature in check this year by focusing on the parts of your journey that are most important.”
Best workout for Capricorn:
“The highly competitive Capricorn would do well in weightlifting because if there is nothing else a Cap loves to do, they sure love to show off any and all of what their mama gave, some of what daddy bought, and even more so if it’s better than yours,” says Ms.IGee. “The sophisticated Capricorn will show off with class and invite you to be runner-up to their show. Capricorns naturally shy away from heavy lifting, but with a good reward you may be able to convince Cap to lift a few extra pounds.”
Aquarius
Analyze your wellness patterns.
Some days, Aquarius, you clean your entire kitchen, make it to a workout class, and even read a self-help book before an (early) bedtime. And other days? You can’t be bothered to do much more than get off your couch. You may struggle with consistency with your health and fitness goals, and that’s okay. Make 2023 about a year where you pull out that analytical side and dig deep into your patterns, DeGolia suggests. Start by asking yourself what is serving your vision for optimal well-being — and what needs adjustment. “Aquarius energy is ruled by the planet Uranus which means it’s not afraid to revolutionize its approach to health and wellness. Permission to reinvent the way you take care of yourself,” she continues. “If you are an Aquarius that has recently made positive changes toward cultivating a healthy lifestyle, keep going. Your hard work will only continue paying off in the year ahead.”
Best workout for Aquarius:
“The Aquarius’ love for freedom would benefit staying active outdoors,” says Ms.IGee. “Hiking, swimming, biking — indoor and outdoor — will keep their desire for many options open to what they desire for that particular moment.”
Pisces
Make your morning routine sacred.
One fish considers themselves a morning person, while another would instead hit ‘snooze’ until the very last minute. If you want to balance your fitness and creative goals in 2022, DeGolia recommends that Pisces turn their AM routine into their sacred space. Because Pisces’ energy is ruled by Neptune, which rules dreams, illusions, and altered states of consciousness, you might enjoy a journaling or meditation practice to kickstart your brain and body. Yoga would do the trick, too. “If you’re a Pisces that gets easily distracted from your wellness goals, write them down and revisit your ‘why’ often,” she adds.
Best workout for Pisces:
“The Pisces would feel at home using water sports to keep them active,” says Ms.IGee. “The naturally intuitive Piscean not only feels at home in the water as it boosts their natural mystical ways, it’s also a great way to stay in shape and gives the naturally lazy Piscean a full-body workout with half of the effort and zero sweat.”
