There’s something about the spring that leaves us itching for a good deep clean. There are many different ways of getting your home in tip-top shape, but not many of these habits are set up to last for the long run. This season, consider your zodiac sign as your cleaning north star. By adopting spring cleaning habits that align with your Sun sign, you’ll not only find a method that works, but you’ll find it a lot easier to keep up with your chores well beyond the refreshing season.
Whether you’re due for a deep clean or looking for ways to keep up with your housekeeping chores, learning how to clean based on your zodiac sign is a great way to get you started. Up ahead, we tap an astrologer to find out the best tips and tricks for cleaning based on astrology, plus the cleaning scents that align with your sun sign.
Aries
March 21-April 19
Best Cleaning Scent: Peppermint for stimulating and cooling at the same time.
As the first sign of the zodiac, Aries is known for its desire to “start new things, take action, and let their inspiration guide them,” says astrologer Sofia Adler. With that said, Aries is great at starting a cleaning project, but “sticking with it and completing it is a whole other story,” she adds.
The best way for a successful clean is for Aries to “take it in quick spurts when they feel inspired.” And, a great way to ignite that inspiration is for Aries to make cleaning a physical activity. “Try squats as you lift things up to put them away or run from room to room so you can build up a sweat.”
Taurus
April 20-May 20
Best Cleaning Scent: Grounding spruce to reconnect with nature.
Taurus desires a serene and cozy space, which makes them naturally great at cleaning. However, they are a fixed sign and, according to Adler, are known for their “steadfast and at times stubborn nature.” So, while Taurus is great at cleaning, getting them to actually start cleaning is a tad difficult. This is especially true “if they’re particularly comfortable or relaxed at the moment.” With that said, once a Taurus gets to cleaning, they do a thorough job. “They move slowly and steadily, committed to cleaning until the job is done,” says Adler.
To get your Taurus self in the cleaning mood, “give yourself a reward,” says Adler. A delicious piece of chocolate, sudsy bath, or glass of wine is the perfect incentive for Taurus.
Gemini
May 21-June 20
Best Cleaning Scent: Eucalyptus for stimulating and invigorating the lungs, which is the part of the body associated with Gemini.
“Geminis prefer disorder, forever stimulated by all the things,” says Adler, noting how the more commotion there is, the better. That being said, if they do need to tidy up, “they prefer to do it with an audiobook or podcast in the background,” Adler explains. “Mental stimulation is key to keeping their head in the game and not getting distracted,” she adds.
The good news is, it’s not too hard to clean up after a Gemini, as it’s usually more about putting things away rather than uncleanliness.
Cancer
June 21-July 22
Best Cleaning Scent: Soothing and healing lavender
Because Cancer sun signs tend to be the most family-oriented and ultimate feelers, they are “likely to get sentimental as they try to clean up,” says Adler. This might cause them to “spend more time reminiscing than putting things away,” she adds, noting how small items around the house are a weakness for Cancer, which makes cleaning up a little more tedious, too.
“The best way to find the motivation to clean is to get the family involved,” says Adler. “Do chores while scoring bonding time? Talk about a win-win.”
Leo
July 23-Aug. 22
Best Cleaning Scent: Warm and centered vanilla — just like a Leo.
Leos are all about having fun, “which makes cleaning one of their least favorite activities,” says Adler. That being said, there are some ways to make cleaning up a bit more exciting for a Leo. Adler recommends putting on music, and maybe even dancing around or grabbing your mop as a microphone to spice up the experience.
As a pro tip, Adler says Leos should spend extra time cleaning mirrors. “Let yourself bask in your reflection as you make them shine.”
Virgo
Aug. 23-Sep. 22
Best Cleaning Scent: Grounding and earthy sandalwood to get Virgos out of their head.
When it comes to Virgos and cleaning, this sun sign is too good at it and “never satisfied,” says Adler. “The detail-oriented sign has an eye for everything and bogged down by getting their space perfect,” she adds. Virgos tend to have a hard time seeing the big picture of a space and how it needs to be cleaned or organized. This can lead to “hyper-focusing on the way the books are lined up or the angle or the lamp,” Adler notes.
One of the best ways for a Virgo to clean is to plan it out. Adler recommends an “excel document for all the cleaning that needs to be done” and then spreading out the chores over a few days. “This way, they won’t get lost in the cleaning tasks and can tend to other aspects of their lives,” she adds.
Libra
Sep. 23-Oct. 22
Best Cleaning Scent: Flirty and uplifting peony.
“A Libra is the epic host, known for their ability to curate a beautiful space,” says Adler. This sun sign is more focused on the presentation than the efficiency of a meal, which means they are “likely to use every dish in the kitchen, filling the sink to the brim,” Adler adds. With that in mind, it helps to clean as they go. But, also, Libras can lean into their love of art and “color code as you clean,” says Adler. “Go beyond the trendy color schemed bookshelf — kitchen cabinets, linen closet, the world is your oyster.”
Scorpio
Oct. 23-Nov. 21
Best Cleaning Scent: Striking and assuredly clean vinegar.
Adler says Scorpios tend to be a little intense about the orderliness in their home since they love to be in control. “The biggest issue for this fixed sign is that they can’t tolerate a space that isn’t cleaned to their standards,” she explains.
To combat this tendency, Adler recommends listing out everything that needs to be done, remembering to incorporate breaks, and trying to remember your water element to help you “go with the flow more.”
Sagittarius
Nov. 22-Dec. 21
Best Cleaning Scent: Refreshing and eye-opening lemon.
A Sagittarius is the complete opposite of a detail-oriented and cleaning-obsessed Virgo. “This boisterous big picture-focused sign doesn’t see any of the little things that contribute to a mess around the house,” says Adler. An effective way for a Sagittarius to clean is to lean into their adventurous side a little more in order to help keep the focus. “Get curious about where things go, and make it a game,” Adler recommends.
Capricorn
Dec. 22-Jan. 19
Best Cleaning Scent: Grounding and earthy tea tree.
Capricorns are ambitious, productive, and work-oriented, which makes cleaning a “sweet spot” for this sun sign, says Adler. “They clean because it’s the responsible thing to do, yet they lack the ability to notice when the feeling of when the home needs sprucing up,” she adds, adding how Capricorn will get the dirt off the floor but might miss the need to fluff up the pillows.
“When creating your work schedule, incorporate cleaning,” Adler recommends. “Just like you do your job, think about all the little things that would allow you to go above and beyond as you tidy,” she adds.
Aquarius
Jan. 20-Feb. 18
Best Cleaning Scent: Orange to stimulate the mind.
“Sometimes cleaning can seem so mundane for the uber-intelligent, rebellious Aquarius,” says Adler, adding that it’s easy for this air sign to “get lost in thinking about cleaning and delay taking action.”
When it comes to cleaning as an Aquarius, Adler recommends using your own mind to your advantage. “Think and talk yourself into sprucing up your home by getting clear on how it supports who you want to be and the kind of life you want to live,” she notes.
Pisces
Feb. 19-Mar. 20
Best Cleaning Scent: Soothing and refreshing bergamot that also helps balance emotions.
“The routine and structure that tidying up requires can trip Pisces up, as this ethereal sign is forever lost in a daydream,” says Adler. The best way for a Pisces to clean up — or at least find the motivation to clean — is to “think of your space as a blank canvas and cleaning up as a huge creative project,” says Adler. Think about ways to use your creative eye to put your home back together.
