It’s a new year and you have new determination to build heathier habits. You set goals, stocked up on cute workout gear and made a plan to go to the gym… just in time for the omicron variant to cause a surge in COVID cases and make going to a workout class feel anxiety-inducing.
Luckily, the at-home fitness market has been booming since the start of the pandemic and personal training apps have gotten even better.
If your goal is to show your body more love through healthful movement this year, we’ve got you covered—no gym necessary.
Future
Future is the closest you’ll get to an actual personal training session without stepping foot in a gym. After filling out a questionnaire that asks you about your goals and your existing habits, the app matches you with a list of Future trainers with expertise in your goals. (If the suggested trainers aren’t resonating with you, you can also browse their full list of profiles and pick whichever trainer stands out.) This is a real person who will actually check in with you every day — not a bot or a coach with a million other clients.
Each week, your trainer will provide you with a custom workout plan. They’ll work around your travel schedule, what equipment you have available to you, and any injuries. You can also send your coach photos and videos from your workouts for feedback on form — it’s almost like having someone there with you.
The app is a bit pricey at $149 per month, but is worth it for the level of personal attention you receive.
Tone It Up
Tone It Up got popular through its bikini body workouts but have evolved to focus more on mental health and the importance of having a healthy, supportive community. (Don’t worry, they still offer amazing workout videos and healthful nutrition plans.)
On the app, there are a mix of free and paid options. You can take on-demand classes, join a meditation program, or tune in for live workouts every morning.
Nike Training Club
The Nike Training Club app is no joke. When you are in the gym, its diverse range of workouts make it easy to make use of all the equipment available to you. And over the pandemic, Nike deepened its library of at-home workouts led by Nike master trainers. It has everything from restorative yoga, to leave-you-panting-on-the-floor HIIT classes, to guided nutrition programs.
You’re not likely to run out of content anytime soon — the app has over 185 free workouts (many of which can be done with no equipment — perfect for when you’re stuck at home) with new content uploaded daily.
If that’s not enough to spark your interest, Nike also just launched a new content series (workouts, mindfulness) with Megan Thee Stallion. So yeah, you’re going to want to get thee hottie self over to the app store, ASAP.
Obé
If you’re missing your favorite class — barre, Pilates, kickboxing, cycling, yoga, HIIT, even trampoline — Obé has you covered with music-driven classes streamed from chic neon-lit studios.
The app really does have almost anything you could want with 20 live classes streamed every day and over 7,000 on-demand classes to choose from. Further capturing the in-person experience, the app also allows you to sync with friends — you can live stream a workout together from your own private video chat room. Get it all for $49 per month.
The Sculpt Society
Founded by celebrity trainer Megan Roup, The Sculpt Society’s workouts are a mix of barre, Pilates, and dance cardio. Don’t be fooled by the fact that every workout stresses having fun — Roup’s classes are hard. Expect high-reps using minimal equipment.
In addition to full-length workouts, TSS has a packed library of 10-minute quickies (perfect for when you’re feeling unmotivated) included in their $20 per month plan.
Alo Moves
If your favorite yoga studio has hit pause on in-person classes, Alo Moves comes highly recommended by thousands of subscribers. For $20 per month, you can access an unlimited number of yoga classes, with options for advanced yogis and those who have never stepped on a mat before.
The library of over 3,000 classes also includes a wide selection of non-yoga workouts. Take a strength class on Monday, a HIIT class on Tuesday, a barre class on Wednesday, a yoga class on Thursday and cap the week off with a Friday meditation.
Alo Moves is particularly great for those looking to deepen their yoga practice by working on specific postures. The app offers a library of guided instructional videos to help you master specific skills like a handstand or crow pose — it’s almost like having your teacher in the room with you.
