As a birthday gift to my fiance, I booked a ‘staycation’ at the seaside Beauport Hotel an hour away from our home in Boston. Besides having a night off from our rambunctious puppy, we also signed up for a massage and reiki session. While we were walking toward the private room where these treatments would happen, he asked me what a reiki session was exactly, and I shrugged.
Though I had heard about ‘energy readings,’ it was the one part of wellness I never dabbled in, so it was as new to me as it was to him. Perhaps, it was the divine timing of this appointment or my pandemic self in desperate need of some emotional cleansing, but my experience with reiki was transformational, as it renewed my spirit and established a deeper connection with the universe. I know it sounds a bit crazy — but trust me, after hearing about my journey, you may become a believer, too.
Here’s what happened:
What happened in my reiki session.
My reiki practitioner was Meah Starr Kadziela, the owner and founder of MajaEden Wellness. She’s been studying and learning about reiki, as well as many additional forms of energy healing since 2009. Currently, she’s a reiki master teacher with her own studio. As Kadziela explained to me in an interview a few months after our session, every practitioner has different methods. Some practitioners like Kadziela channel direct messages from a person’s spirit guides and/or crossed-over loved ones.
But what is it? As defined by Kadziela, reiki is divine energy derived from the universe channeled through the practitioner to the client. “The practitioner does not direct this energy. Rather this energy flows to where it needs to go within the body, as it has its own divine intelligence to do so,” she explains. “When Reiki is being received within the client, it is said to move any stagnant energy blocks which may hinder the homeostasis of our being. Therefore benefiting our body, mind and spirit. It ignites our ability to heal ourselves internally as we are meant.”
In practice, my reiki session felt a lot like an assisted nap. While fully clothed, I laid on my stomach on a massage table and closed my eyes. Kadziela then started placing her hands gently on various parts of my body, starting on my right side. There was soft music playing, and I quickly became at ease. Throughout the hour-long session, I felt warmth, I drifted in-and-out of light sleep, and at times, I saw flashes of purple light. In general, I would describe it as a meditative-like state, where very few thoughts ran through my hand, and I was deeply relaxed.
Kadizela says people can have a multitude of feelings or sensations, including:
- Vibrating.
- Moments of cold and/or heat.
- Pulsating.
- Feeling as if you are out of your body.
- Lightheadedness.
- Weeping.
- Laughing.
- Deep relaxation.
- Or, nothing at all.
As Kadizela was moving across my body, slightly pressing with two hands, she received channel downloads of information or visions. After my session was over and I slowly ‘woke up,’ we sat down to talk about what she saw and who she spoke to — and this is when I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
What happened right after my reiki session.
Kadziela says she goes into a trance state when she provides energy healing, particularly when her medium powers are ignited. Because of this, she says sometimes she doesn’t quite remember individual sessions unless they stood out to her — and mine was one of those. We sat in the corner of the private room and I was in awe of what my spirit guides/universe told her:
The black rose.
As Kadziela explained to me, our right side is our masculine side, while our left is our feminine. During my session, my right side required the most energy healing, which led to Kadziela asking me if my father had recently passed away. At the time, my dad was going through yet another health crisis in his 17 years old battle with various illnesses. I shared that no, my dad was still here, but that he wasn’t well. “The energy of your father came through very strongly. I was certain he was already crossed over when receiving these messages,” she continues. “And it felt so powerful for him to be there standing protectively over you and offering insight on different childhood memories and feelings directly involving you.”
During my session, she saw a ‘black rose,’ which symbolizes an impending crossover. At that moment, Kadziela says it was clear to her that if my father hadn’t passed away, it was going to happen soon. That was on December 22, 2020 — and my dad took his last breath on January 2, 2021.
Leading up to this session, I kept waking up in the middle of the night, feeling like someone was in our bedroom. I would nudge my fiance, but he saw nothing. I had a sinking notion I was being watched, but once my dad passed, it stopped. After learning about the reiki session, I realized my dad’s spirit was visiting me as he was figuring out when to leave. When I reached out to Kadziela to let her know the reading accuracy, she said my dad can now be the parent he couldn’t be when he was sick — and that he was no longer in pain. To me, that was the greatest gift of peace.
The #23 and the word ‘grace.’
Right before my reiki session, I was brainstorming my word of the year for 2021. I tend to choose a single word rather than a resolution since I find it easier to focus on my decisions and plans this way. Since 2020 was all about flexibility and adaptability, I didn’t set the best boundaries. I was hard on myself since my freelance income suffered a bit of a loss, and my waistline expanded a bit. Instead of being negative, I decided my word would be ‘grace’ — and I would focus on being kinder to myself. And letting ‘my best’ truly be enough.
During my session, Kadziela said two random things that kept popping up: The number 23 and the word ‘grace.’ Strangely enough, my hotel room number was 23. And when Kadziela looked up this number in the Angel Cards, it was the angel of grace. Though at the time, she didn’t know if ‘grace’ was a name or a word, she knew she had to relay it to me since it kept coming through. “Spirit does this: sends an obscure and very random message of confirmation so that the person knows it’s for them,” she continues. “I could never otherwise know this information, and it allows them to receive the other messages with a higher level of comfort that it is meant for them.”
A pregnancy.
So this one hasn’t come true — yet — but another message that came through was surrounding a baby. Once my fiance and I wed this summer, we intend to start trying to grow our family right away. I’ll turn 33 this year, and we want to have a few children, so fertile time is of the essence. While I had my reiki session, my fiance was also having a session with a different practitioner. Kadziela saw a pregnancy for me this year, and she also saw a young girl looking up to me with admiration and love. My fiance’s reiki teacher saw a big ‘ole burst of pink for him, like at a gender reveal party. Perhaps it’s an omen of a daughter? (And maybe we’ll name her Grace?)
What happened since my reiki session.
First of all, I can’t stop talking (and raving!) about my reiki experience. And I’m already booking my next session. After this experience, I had vivid dreams, and I’ve felt as if signs from the universe are more apparent to me. In general, I also feel like it was a way to force my typical type-A self to relax. It helped to ease my nervousness and gave me hope for what’s ahead in my life. “I especially notice when a person suffers from anxiety or stress, a 60-minute reiki session can greatly relax them into being able to take their power back,” Kadziela explains.
And that’s exactly what it did: it provided the mental tools for me to cope and progress. My experience may not be like anyone else’s, and that’s the point. Reiki is all about channeling personal energy, and whatever is running through you will release it. But I can promise one thing: you’ll feel lighter and happier afterward. “I have noticed each person holds a different experience, but nonetheless they hold some kind of experience,” Kadziela continues. “It makes a difference to all of them.”
