If you’ve scrolled through Instagram or TikTok recently, chances are you’ve come across a hot new trend in the hosting space: butter boards. And yep, they’re exactly what you think they are — butter, on a board, ready to eat. But they’re also so much more.
Set up like a charcuterie board but with the main feature being spreadable, scoopable butter, butter boards have endless options for ingredients and themes, and are chic, Insta-worthy, and delicious. It’s pretty much the perfect holiday appetizer for a brunch, lunch, dinner, or even dessert party.
For some holiday hosting inspiration, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite butter board configurations that will leave your mouth watering and guests smiling. From simple and stunning to sweet and savory, there’s something for everyone, and every event.
Bon appétit!
1. Fig & Honey
View this post on InstagramA post shared by Jacqueline Vignona | Easy & Delicious Recipes (@spread.the.grub)
This beautiful board shared by @spread.the.grub is created with a soft butter base, and topped with figs, pomegranates, pumpkin seeds, herbs, and hot pepper jelly. For the finisher, it’s topped with drizzled amaretto-infused honey and served with sliced fresh baguette. (Bonus points if you toast it!)
2. Pumpkin Spice
Pumpkin spice at the holidays will never get old, especially with this butter board creation by @mrs.j_houck. A great option for a brunch offering or dessert, this board’s base features a mixture of softened goat butter, pumpkin puree, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, all spice, and honey. It’s then topped with dark chocolate and roasted pumpkin seeds. We think this pairs perfectly with a cinnamon- or pumpkin-flavored bread.
3. Onion & Garlic
What goes better together than onion and garlic? It’s a classic pairing that’s sure to please most palettes. Featured here by
4. Tomato Basil
This one is giving us pizza vibes, but subbing cheese for butter — and we’re here for it! Using clarified butter, or ghee, @clarifiedliving crafted a tomato basil butter board topped with sliced Roma tomatoes, fresh basil, and a balsamic glaze. We’d pair this with a ciabatta, or Italian breadsticks!
5. Butter Board Wreath
Feeling festive? @Lordbyronskitchen arranged this beautiful butter board in the shape of a wreath! Framed with grilled bread chips, this beauty is topped with cranberry compote, walnuts, pomegranate seeds, honey, flaked sea salt, and more. The nutty, cirtusy flavors of the season are not only delicious, but make for a gorgeous presentation, too. Here is their full recipe.
6. Buttercream Board
Thinking outside the “butter” box, a buttercream board is equally delicious and innovative. In fact, it’s practically the most perfect dessert. We love how @vintagegwen combined a sweet buttercream icing base, drizzled it with caramel and sprinkles, and paired it with fresh strawberries and graham crackers. This way, guests can indulge in as little (or as much) icing as they please, and play with fun combinations, too.
