Black Musicians You Should Be Following on Instagram

December 27, 2021
By Iman Balagam
There are thousands of thinkpieces out there as to why social media is corrupting the youth and ruining our attention spans. While I often agree, as my screen time is egregious, at times the benefits outweigh the bad. You can curate a feed that represents you and your interests. While we complain about the media and who they cast in movies (Scarlett Johansson), at least I have full control over who I choose to scroll through. I can follow people who look like me that are out there doing big things. Representation matters, and social media has helped me fill in the holes in a way traditional media was never able to.   Back in my day (aha five years ago) the only way to access a celebrity’s inner sanctum was by subscribing to their fan page online. For $10 a month, privileged kids everywhere were able to read Miley Cyrus’ inner thoughts and show off their membership card on the playground. Times have changed, and cool new artists are aplenty. We asked DJ Ehlie Luna to curate a Spotify playlist for us showcasing some of her favorite artists. Get to know them by listening to our playlist or stalk them below on Instagram.
