Trim the Tree and Your Eyes

February 9, 2022
By Drew Carlos
The Sunday Edit staff never needs an excuse to be festive. But the holidays are an excellent opportunity to take it to the next level (no, we do not mean ugly sweaters). Instead of holiday dresses, we are talking about holiday eyes. Below, find the perfect eyeshadow and ornament pairings for when you are feeling extra decorative this December.
We only recommend products we have independently researched, tested and loved. If you purchase a product found through our links, Sunday Edit may earn an affiliate commission.

O Christmas Tree

Let’s start with the classics. Aside from Santa — we will get to jolly old Saint Nicholas, do not worry — the Christmas tree in all of its sparkling glory is the centerpiece of Christmas. And, this Stila Vivid & Vibrant Eyeshadow Duo in Jade will make sure you are the center of attention at your next Christmas party. Focus the darker green on the outer corner of the eye and do not forget to blend when layering the second color onto the lid. The perfect tree shade of green, this shadow will let you turn on the sparkle and top off your look.

Love Actually

Last month, Love Actually celebrated its 15th anniversary. Whether you admire Hugh Grant dancing up a storm or that iconic front door scene, it is clear that love is in the air. And, it still is. So why not create a romantic eye to match? Utilize the Charlotte Tilbury Luxury Eyeshadow Palette in Dolce Vita for a smokey eye that will be sure to catch your lover’s eye, just as this hot air balloon is sure to stand out on the tree.

Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Santa Claus is an icon, and his ornament deserves an iconic pairing. Enter Pat McGrath, one of the most influential faces in the makeup industry. Take the Mothership V Eyeshadow Palette, specifically the deep red of Blitz Flame and shimmer of Skinshow Divine Glow, to create a look embodying Santa’s shimmering ornament (white, snowy beard and suit of red). Red eyes may sound intimidating (and can often make you look like you have shed a few tears), but instead of covering the whole lid, use a thin brush to line the eyes with the unique color. Anyone can pull off a Santa-esque look, all you need is the right tools — workshop not included.

Silver and Gold

It would not be the holidays without Burl Ives’ Silver and Gold playing through the speakers. And, you would be remiss not to see many a tree with a silver and gold theme. Taking it a step further, elevate your look with a silver and gold eye. Mix the Marc Jacobs See-quin Glam Glitter Eyeshadow in Flashlight and Gleam Girl to create a look that would make Ives proud. Dressing — or glamming — to the theme is never a bad thing.

It's Lit

Everyone has fun ornament. Maybe it is a champagne bottle, an avocado or a taxi cab. Or, perhaps it has one of the most popular phrases among millennials scrolled across it. With holiday lights galore, it is, indeed, lit — and your eyes are no exception. Pick up a Fenty Killawatt Foil Freestyle Highlighter Palette and light it up. The universal palette can also be used as a highlighter on the cheek or your collar bone to add dimension to your look. Your eyes, and you, deserve it.
