New York Fashion Week Spring 2020 Beauty Looks You Can Do Right Now

It is no secret that every season New York Fashion Week sets the style trends we will see on the red carpet, but what about real life? When it comes to hair and makeup, there is something for everyone to feel like they can replicate a look they love from the runways at home.

We narrowed down our favorites below — and though the pros are predicting what will be popular for next spring and summer, we bet you simply won’t be able to wait to try them right now.

Bedazzled Braids

For Alice + Olivia, hairstylist Justine Marjan adorned Dutch pigtail braids with mini pearl and crystal stickers. The key to this ethereal look (any brides-to-be out there?) is the random placement of the stickers so it doesn’t look too stiff and proper.

Bold, Bushy Brows

At Jonathan Simkhai, makeup artist Gato was inspired by a trip to the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico and its neutral palette. A natural, dewy complexion allows bold brows to shine as the hero of the look. Want to try it out? Gato filled in brows using Maybelline New York Brow Ultra Slim Defining Eyebrow Pencil in feather-like strokes to mimic actual brow hairs.

Scarf-tied Buns

At Kate Spade New York, hairstylist James Pecis lit up our Instagram feeds with voluminous buns adorned with bright colorful scarves (which played off the show’s floral theme). He started off by spritzing Oribe’s Maximista Thickening Spray on wet hair, blow-drying, then pulling hair back into a low ponytail. You can create the chignon or bun of your choice — it doesn’t have to look perfect. But the star of the style is your favorite silky scarf. Wrap it around your bun and tie it into a knot at the nape of your neck. We love how it dresses up even the most casual of looks.

Glittery French Manis

The FRENCH MANI: the great debate of 2019. If people are saying it’s back, that means that it first had to leave. And some people say that it never left-that it’s a “classic”. . So, how do we know who’s right? Perhaps we should ask those who set the trends, in the fashion capital of the world (aka the creative directors and major stylists and editors and magazines like @voguemagazine and @harpersbazaarus and @allure AND the celebrities who are wearing the look again after a long absence, like @badgalriri and @bellahadid 🙀😎) and yes…. editorial manicurists like myself who’s very job it is to set. nail. trends. 😎 . Yes, they went away. No, they’re not a classic. And yes, they’re back.☺️ . Nails designed by me with Christian Siriano for @essie for the @csiriano show, Saturday, September 7, 2019 … … … … … #christiansiriano #christiansirianoss2020 #frenchmanicure #pastelnails #turquoiseandcaicos #setinstones #essielove #essienyfw

At Christian Siriano, French manis became cool again — with a fun twist. Nail artist Julie Kandalec created a “painterly” French tip with a futuristic finish that featured Essie Nail Polish in Turquoise & Caicos along the tip of the nail (instead of a classic opaque white). Then she applied Essie Nail Polish in Set in Stones (a silvery glitter) across the entire nail stopping just before the French tip. It looks like fancy nail art without any of the hassle.

Pale Pink Lips

At L’Agence, makeup artist Grace Lee paired Twiggy-esque spider lashes with pale pink lips by filling the entire lip with Maybelline New York SuperStay Matte Ink Liquid Lipstick in Loyalist. Then, she layered the same lipstick in shades Dreamer and Romantic over the top to finish. Depending on how many coats you use for each color, you can play around with the level of “frostiness” for this look to tailor it to your skin tone.

Sleek Rope Braids

Beautiful show from a beautiful heart. Thank you @gabrielahearst ✨ Styling #camillanickerson Makeup @hannah_murray1 @jesshallettcast Hair #jamespecis Big thank you to #ORIBEhaircare and the pro team for taking the challenge to do all the girls without electrics. @oribe @oribepro #gelserum #rockhardgel #gelee @bryantartists #carbonneutral #fashionforward

In a fashion industry first, designer Gabriela Hearst pledged for her show to be carbon-neutral — and, it turns out, even your hairstyle can leave a carbon footprint. Pecis was asked to not use any electricity (aka no blow-dryers, curling irons or straighteners) to create this sleek, twisted rope braid. He smoothed out hair using Oribe’s Gel Sérum, combed back hair into a low pony (without a part), separated hair into two sections and twisted them together before looping the end back into itself. To secure the look, he used a thin piece of black leather tied into a knot. It is a completely upgraded take on your casual pony.

Neon Cat-eyes

At Helmut Lang, makeup artist Susie Sobol was inspired by ’90s punk culture for this bright, bold eye makeup look — perfect for experimenting for a night out. After lining eyes with a white eyeliner pencil (it helps for the neon color to pop more), she used a dense eyeliner brush to layer loose fluorescent powder (the kind that they use for theater makeup) on top of the white eyeliner. They key to pulling off this look is to keep the rest of your face neutral and fresh.

Side-parted Ponys

At Longchamp, Redken Global creative director Guido Palau showed us another way to give a classic ponytail a chic spin by creating a deep, sleek side part. He used Redken Triple Pure 32 Hairspray to nix any flyaways before securing the pony at the nape of the neck.

Messy Chignons

messy buns for the @rebeccaminkoff show ➰ the inspiration was the modern working woman challenging what it means to be professional so the buns are super realistic and we added a pop of color with a faded pastel extension in the back that make it seem like she’s holding on to a memory 🤩 #justinemarjanhair #nyfw #pastelhair

A post shared by justine marjan (@justinemarjan) on Sep 12, 2019 at 11:43am PDT

For Rebecca Minkoff, Marjan created a low, messy bun with faded pastel extensions that was inspired by the modern working woman. Random, large sections of hair were bent using a flat iron to create texture to the look. Then she spritzed TRESemmé Between Washes Volumizing Dry Shampoo into the roots before pulling it back into a bun.

Cloth-Embedded Braids

At Jonathan Cohen, hairstylist Laurent Philippon incorporated the designer’s leftover scraps from the collection into an otherwise simple braided ponytail. As for the sleek, shiny hair itself? That is thanks to Bumble & Bumble Bb. Gel. Wrap patterned fabric (or a silky scarf you have at home) around the root of the ponytail and begin braiding it into the hair. Tie off the braid using the fabric.
