Cuban influencer Mei Jorge is no stranger to laying it all out on the (virtual) table. After all, it’s what she’s done for close to a decade with her award-winning bilingual blog and Instagram account, cleverly titled @blameitonmei. In both, she gives her followers a front row look at her chic-meets-cozy personal style as well as an inside look at her busy life as a mom of two. We caught up with the Miami resident to dive even deeper on her current obsessions, from her favorite style trend to her go-to Sunday Riley products, and so much more.
Tell us a bit more about how you got to where you are now.
“Having a graphic design background has been a huge help these past 7+ years as a content creator. However, jumping into something new requires lots of research, especially in the relatively new world of content creation/influencing/blogging. There have been lots of learning curves to overcome. Many late nights finding myself in the deep rabbit hole of the worldwide net, with several mistakes that become learning opportunities, constant algorithm changes to figure out, and hundreds of pitch emails to follow up on. Despite all the hard work, dedication, and long hours, I am content with where I am now. I am lucky to have met incredible women who have along the way helped and shared their knowledge of the blogosphere. The journey has been long but very rewarding.”
What has the pandemic taught you about feeling confident with your style choices?
“I think many people lost their style given the work-from-home-no-need-to-dress-up situation. As for me, I have ventured to try things I never thought I would, like chunky loafers, chic athleisure, and a more elevated basic ensemble. This has taught me to feel more confident and comfortable with change and — may I dare say — become more fearless with my style choices.”
What’s your favorite style trend at the moment?
“A few current favorites are chunky loafers, shackets (even though I rarely get to wear them in the Miami weather), matching sets, and the basic combo of a simple white top with a high-waisted blue jean.”
What’s your advice for people who’ve been struggling with their style after working from home for so long, or going through a big life change like becoming a new mom?
“I became a second-time mom a few months before the pandemic went global. So, this question resonates on so many levels. My first advice is: Just get out of those workout clothes! It was so much easier for me to throw on some leggings and a baggy t-shirt first thing in the morning, given, I was exhausted from having a newborn and toddler to take care of. But as soon as I saw how my self-confidence and mood skyrocketed once I re-discovered the jeans and blouses in my closet, I decided to add those five minutes to my morning routine. Second: Start small; for example, today wear something that is not a pair of sweatpants or a tank top. Do this for a few days. When you are ready, add an accessory, and after a few more days of this, up your game with a little makeup and/or a hairdo.”
How does your morning routine differ from your nighttime routine when it comes to skincare?
“In my daytime skincare routine, I focus on protecting my skin from sun damage, and pore-clogging agents (like dirt and pollution), while my nighttime routine is all about keeping my dry skin hydrated and addressing my main skin concern: discoloration. Because I suffer from dry skin, the Sunday Riley C.E.O. AfterGlow Brightening Vitamin C Gel Cream has been a new addition and the key element in both my night and morning routine. My nighttime routine always starts with a cleanser, even if I did not wear makeup that day. I follow with a toner, serum, eye cream, and moisturizer. If my skin is really dehydrated, I add the Sunday Riley Luna Night Oil. Because I usually work out in the mornings, I use the same nighttime routine except I swap the serum out with Sunday Riley C.E.O Vitamin C Serum.”
How do you treat your skin when it’s feeling particularly stressed?
“Water, water, water. My skin and body feels (and looks) so much better when this essential source of hydration is part of my routine. But when I’m particularly stressed and I know I need an extra pick-me-up, I opt for a face mask. I usually go for a hydrating or brightening one.”
Do you have any secret beauty tips and tricks?
“My most important tips are: Get a good night’s sleep, take care of your body from the inside out by staying hydrated, eat a balanced diet, exercise, and remember it’s never too early to start taking care of your skin.”
As a Cuban-American, we’d love to know if you have some favorite POC-owned fashion and beauty brands that you’re loving at the moment.
“I have a few very local brands I am VERY into: Alamar Cosmetics with their beautiful eyeshadow palettes; Cuyana with their timeless handbags; Kabuki Jewelry with their water-resistant fashion jewelry; and Garota, a one-of-a-kid fashion brand I am obsessed with.”
What does self-care look like for you?
“Self-care has become my top priority after becoming a mom. Filling my cup is an essential part of my mental health in order to be able to pour onto others around me. Anything from a facial and a manicure, to jotting in my journal or having a solo meal at my favorite food spot — they all help me stay sane and content.”
What’s the greatest lesson you’ve learned in 2022?
“Lowering my expectations is something I am still learning. Having certain expectations draws us to unhappiness. And that goes for everything in life. When you lower your expectations, you not only appreciate life and those around you for who they are, but you are genuinely more fulfilled and satisfied with everything that surrounds you.”
What are you looking forward to next year?
“I am looking forward to traveling more, with and without the kiddos. My husband and I used to be avid travelers — we’ve visited over 25 countries — but after babies and the pandemic, everything came to a stop. I would also love to attend more social events where I can catch up with my blogging besties and meet the up-and-coming content creators the isolation brought forth.”
