May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month — collectively reminding us that we need to make an appointment at our dermatologist’s office for an annual skin screening. According to skincancer.org, approximately 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by 70, which means these checkups are an incredibly vital part of good skin health.
A trip to the dermatologist for an annual skin check is essential, but you should also take care of your skin year-round. For starters, you can do this by wearing sunscreen, avoiding tanning beds, and finding a skincare routine that works best for you.
And many health experts take to social media, such as TikTok, to help spread awareness and knowledge. Though there are a lot of questionable beauty trends that occur on TikTok, you can rely on the pros to give honest and reliable advice that you can trust.
If you’re looking to beef up your feed with some skincare expertise in honor of Skin Cancer Awareness month, follow one of these amazing Black dermatologists below. Not only is it important to lift the voices of the 3% of dermatologists in the U.S. who are Black, but they also have personal experiences in treating melanated skin and are helping break barriers in getting the proper care for people of color.
