How to DIY the Coolest Fall Makeup Trends, According to MUAs

Fall fashion week (month, really) is in full swing and it feels like we are officially back from the land of coordinating sweatsuits and Zoom makeup. This season, the runways were “a makeup enthusiast’s dream,” says Kim Baker, celebrity makeup artist and founder of Glamazon Beauty. “So much emphasis was put on every part of the face, especially eyes and lips.”

As a makeup artist and licensed esthetician, Ami Mallon puts it: “Glam season is coming in hot.”

We asked Baker and Mallon for the makeup looks they’re most excited to see this fall and how to do them yourself.

Gilded Eyes

“One of my favorite looks of the season was a gilded gold eye that really made a bold statement,” says Baker. To get the look, sweep a richly pigmented shimmery gold shade on your lids. “Just take a couple of swipes along the upper lash line right above your lashes,” says Baker.

To make it more dramatic, follow up with a winged liner. (Baker recommends Glamazon’s Flawless Gel Eyeliner Pen. “The felt tip on this pen makes it so easy to create winged eyes and perfect for creating graphic eye looks,” she says.)

Pops of Purple

“This is the year of color,” says Mallon. “Soft icy lilac shades have dominated runways in clothing, accessories and in makeup — a hint of lilac on lids flatters all skin tones.”

To DIY the look, “begin by warming up the crease with your favorite neutral matte eyeshadow shade,” Mallon says. For a subtle wash of color, sweep a lilac shadow (Mallon loves Jane Iredale’s Purple Rain Eyeshadow Kit) across lids. “For enhanced color payoff, press eyeshadow onto the lids rather than sweep,” she says. “Pair with a peachy nude lip and melon cheek for a punchy pop that’s never overdone.”

Smoldering Eyes

The smoky eye is classic for a reason: it’s easy to do, and it always seems to show up in one iteration or another season after season. But this fall, the smoky eye is particularly bold. “I like to think of this as Goth meets grunge with dark, black, smudgy liner all around the eyes,” says Mallon. (She uses Jane Iredale’s Mystikol Powdered Liner, a cream-to-powder formula.) Pair it with a nude lip, or a mask.

Vampy Lips

“One of the looks that slew me this season was one of my all-time favorites: vampy lips. It gives off sultry with a splash of gothic beauty,” says Baker.

To get it, look for deep wine or berry shades. (Baker loves Glamazon’s  Cheek-N-Lip Color in Lady Like for a variety of skin tones.) Keep it fresh for daytime with dewy skin and a swipe of mascara, or go dramatic by pairing vampy lips with smoldering eyes.

Overdrawn Lips

Mallon predicts lips will be big this season — literally. “Another trend that will be hot this season is overdrawn lips,” she says. Think of this technique as the needle-free way to fake the look of fillers. “Darker neutral lip liners can create a natural contoured effect for bigger lips,” says Mallon. Using lip liner, trace your pout drawing the line on the outside of lips (rather than on the inside like you would traditionally use lip liner). Fill in using a matching lipstick shade.

Bigger Bolder Lashes

“Lashes that ‘enter the room before you do’ graced the runways at fashion week and are always guaranteed to make a statement,” says Mallon.

You don’t need false lashes to get the look — mascara, using the right technique, can give you the same heavy lash. “Simply press the mascara wand into the root of lashes in what I like to call a ‘stamping technique.’ This will give the appearance of a thicker lash,” Mallon explains. “Then wiggle toward the end of lashes to build length and finally lay the wand on the tips of the lashes to achieve maximum extension.”
