9 Hair Bloggers Share Their Favorite Edge Controls

November 19, 2021
By Teryn Payne
For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with slicking my edges. My earliest memory is as an 8-year-old, looking in the mirror while doing my hair in a really sleek ponytail, taking Ampro Protein Styling Gel with a toothbrush, and then tying a scarf so tight around my head that I couldn’t even think straight. I would keep it on until I reached my destination and impatiently waited until the big reveal. My edges would be so sleek, it looked like they were glued to my scalp — and that is exactly how I liked it. Now that years have passed and I have experimented with various edge controls, I have been on the hunt for the one. My latest combination when I am wearing braids and twists consists of  Moroccan Argan Oil and Ampro Shine ’n Jam Conditioning Gel Regular Hold (which smells amazing by the way) because it holds my edges without weighing them down. I also love Cantu’s Extra Hold Edge Stay Gel and Moco de Gorila’s Gorilla Snot Gel when I want extreme hold. With the summer rapidly approaching, I decided to tap some of my favorite hair gurus to ask them about their most coveted edge controls. Ahead, read up on some of the hidden gems of the edge control world! We only recommend products we have independently researched, tested, and loved. “For everyday styling, I like to reach for normal gels to set my edges. It’s usually The Mane Choice Crystal Orchid Biotin Infused Styling Gel. It’s not sticky or fussy, and it smooths and holds the hair in place beautifully for the day. It also contains healthy-hair ingredients where I don’t have to worry about damaging my edges in the process. If I’m looking to freeze my edges in place, it’s definitely the Creme of Nature Flexible Styling Snot. It will hold your hair and edges exactly where you want them until wash day, and it provides a nice, light, natural-looking sheen to the hair.”

“When it comes to edge control, they’re not all made equal. EDEN BodyWorks makes the best edge control out there, if you ask me. It has incredible hold, like really incredible. I can use it to slick back my hair on the hottest, most humid day and my hair won’t budge. It’s my tried and true favorite! It also comes in a 6-ounce tub, which lasts so long!”

“Edge control is so important in my everyday natural hairstyles. Whether I am rocking my go-to wash-n-go or opting for a sleek bun, edge control brings each look to life! Lately, I have been loving TGIN’s Smooth & Hold Edge Control. It smells amazing and provides a soft lasting hold with added shine. It doesn’t leave my hair hard or flaky! The Smooth & Hold Edge Control is formulated with castor oil, which promotes hair growth. My top tip is to use a toothbrush to create your desired edge style and lay your edges down with a satin scarf for 5 minutes. This tip will give you the perfect edges that last throughout the entire day!”

“I’ve tried tons of edge controls! My hair is naturally coily, so if the edge control isn’t strong enough, my baby hairs will raise up before I leave the house. I used to be a fan of Hicks but eventually, my hair got used to it. Now, I’m a fan of Murray’s Edgewax, and I use it faithfully. My process is simple: I spray a little water first on my edges go get them loose, then I add the edge wax. I use a combination of an edge control toothbrush and my finger to get the perfect swoop. It probably takes me a good 10 [minutes] to get them exactly how I want, and then they are stuck in formation for the entire day!”

“My top two favorite edge controls are Hicks Total Transformations Edges Styling Gel and Ebin New York 48 Hour Edge Tamer (Extreme Mega Hold). Both of these products provide great hold and shine, keeping edges slicked down for longer periods of time, and are not too heavy or greasy. I’ve used Hicks for quite some time now, and it’s been my go-to, but Ebin New York is a newfound fav[e] of mine.”

“Silk Elements Strength ’n Silk Edge Gel. This product, along with the two Kelsey mentioned, are all dependable — holding edges so that the hair does not revert back and stays put while providing a sleek look and shine to finish off.”

“My favorite edge control is LovelyB’s Edge Control. I love it because unlike many edge controls I’ve used in the past, this product NEVER flakes on me and leaves my edges soft, but laid.”

“I have tried so many edge controls under the sun and can easily go between them. Though not a typical ‘edge control,’ Eco Style … has been by my go-to throughout the years when I wear my go-to slick back. It doesn’t leave any flakes, it has a hold that’s slick but still very natural-looking, and I can use it for my entire head. It’s truly the best of both worlds.”

“My favorite edge control is the Don’t Shrink Gel by Aunt Jackie’s. I love it because I can use it not only on my edges but all of my hair as well. Because it’s primarily water-based, it doesn’t leave flakes or white residue! To get the best sleek down effect, I sometimes use a blow dryer on a medium heat setting and a brush to stretch my edges before applying the gel.”
