Quarantine Beauty Horror Stories

Authored by Sunday Edit

March 26, 2021

In these months of lockdown, we have been pretty creative. We trimmed our own hair, made bath bombs and candles and many of us tried to get rid of our gel manicure while saving the nails. It has been a challenge, but we made it. We shared these stories in the Office chat. Our Director of Social Media & Influencer Marketing even dyed her own eyelashes, but the black dye got all over her eye and even nose… “Took a few days of double cleansing with Blue Moon to get it off!” said Katie Keil. So we asked our Facebook Group ‘Sunday Community’ to tell us their most unforgettable beauty horror stories of 2020. Here are some of our favorites:

“During the beginning of quarantine, I accidentally chemically burned my face. I used retinol for the first time every day for a week and didn’t know I couldn’t mix certain products with it. Once I realized what I did, I used a gentle cleanser, Juno oil, and ICE moisturizer daily until my face healed 💕,” — Melissa Hansen.

“I ordered a face pore vacuum and ended up with hickeys all over my face,” — Nicole Rosario.

“So, I have PCOS. I have to shave my face every day and around January I got sick of it! I’m 35 I’ve been shaving my face for 20 years. I decided I was going to try some Nair…..on my face. Lol I go to the store and buy my Nair come home and I’m ready! This is going to be the end all be all for me, a game changer. I knew my face was going to feel like a smooth dolphin and I’d never have to shave my face again. I read the instructions and put the [N]air on my face. Maybe within 2 minutes I feel this burning feeling and I just ignore it because well, clearly, I’m an idiot. I was so pumped. Adrenaline was rushing. NO. MORE. SHAVING!!! So I wait the full 10 minutes. Now it’s time to rinse. I immediately feel this fire in my face. I tell myself, that just means it worked. It felt like I was on fire. Lol so I towel off and I’m excited. I’m ready so see the smooth glistening mermaid I always knew I could be. I look in the mirror and my skin literally looks like one of the zombies from the Walking Dead. I was mortified! I chemically burned my face. It eventually healed with the help of Juno. I rubbed it on like my life depended on it. I think I went through 3 small bottles that month. No scarring. Thank God. Moral of the story do not use Nair on your face!” — Karla Sullivan.

“I went platinum blonde and lost 6 inches of hair in the process,” — Ashley Stimmel.

“During quarantine I used a semi-permanent black gloss on my hair. The bottle clearly said wear gloves but I figured it’s semi-perm so how bad can it be? It instantly dyed the palms of my hands black. After several minutes of panicked frantic scrubbing with pumice soap it came off,” — Monica Patel Swartz.

“DYI at home bikini wax…I am still traumatized,” — Deborah McClaren.

“I went too heavy on my microderm and it left scratches on both cheeks that looked like red painted on cat whiskers. Thank goodness for Ice,” — Stacey Owsiany.
