How to Tie-Dye

Authored by Iman Balagam

I remember hearing someone in the office last year boldly exclaiming, “Tie-dye is making a comeback!” I laughed because, in my mind, it was a pattern exclusively worn by preteens at summer camp. But once again, I was wrong. I can’t turn my virtual head without running into a two-piece set of tie-dye shirts and pants. Shockingly, I do not find it to be overkill, either. The more I see it, the more I feel compelled to tie-dye everything in my closet.

But ready-made tie-dye pieces cost an arm and a leg, so it is best to create your own. Plus, it is an excellent activity to add to your quarantine resume, as you do not need a lot of materials to get started. First, pick out a sweatshirt, hat or anything that you would like to dye. Then grab some dish soap, rubber bands and gloves to protect your hands. If you are going with colored dye, Rit All-Purpose Dye is the top pick, but if you are a beginner, you may want to purchase a tie-dye kit. Once you have your dye, pour it into mixing bottles or spray bottles for easier application. If you are going for the bleach dye aesthetic, we suggest using a spray bottle of Clorox bleach.

And now, without further ado, I present you with…. trust me, tye that. A piece on creative tie-dye designs brought to you through TikTok videos (the most Gen Z sentence you will read all day).
