When watching Tangled this past weekend, I noticed some eerie similarities between her situation and the one we find ourselves living in today. Commonalities: isolated from those we love. Differences: Rapunzel looks way too good for someone in quarantine. Was she getting ready for… herself? Personally, putting makeup on these days for no one to see feels indulgent, which probably speaks more to my psychology than I realize. However, I am now unable to recognize my face in the mirror and the line “cameras on” is a looming threat.
Which is why I have decided to channel big Rapunzel energy and dust off my makeup. Because it is so hot outside, I only like using these 7 products. Perfect for when you walk to grab a cup of coffee, sit on your terrace, or take a stroll around the neighborhood in your chic mask. They help hydrate my skin, do not melt off in a sweaty landslide and give you that “no makeup-makeup look” that everyone aims for.
Face Oil
Foundation? In this economy? Pass. This tinted face oil is known as the “sweatpants of foundation,” which naturally spoke to me. It is breathable, minimizes pores, blurs imperfections and is available in 16 sheer-coverage shades. It is also made with 6 nourishing botanical oils that moisturize the skin rather than leaving it cakey and dry. The best part is that it can be applied with your fingertips which is great because my makeup brushes have gone into early retirement.
Concealer
Because of all the stress-eating and lack of water consumption I find myself breaking out more than ever before. “It is time for the big guns,” I say while pulling out this itty-bitty vegan concealer pot. Made with natural arnica – an herbaceous plant in the sunflower family for all you science nerds – to help nourish and heal the skin. On top of that, arnica has antiseptic and anti-inflammatory properties that work to calm down any inflamed areas.
Brow Gel
No time like the present to perfect the effortless French girl bold brow and red lip combination. This formula contains tiny microfibers (you can’t see them – I checked) that adhere to skin and hair to create fullness and definition. The brush is the perfect size, making application as easy as possible. Plus, it is waterproof, on the rare occasion they take you swimming on the first date.
Pigment
A lot of people relay the trauma they faced growing up with freckles. I however have dreamt of being called a “freck-face” since childhood and, thanks to capitalism, I can now achieve it. The easy-to-use brush allows you to quickly tap on a bunch of realistic and long-lasting faux freckles. Like my freckles? Gee thanks just bought it.
Luminizer
“Her glow was so powerful she blinded me through the screen” – comments overheard in the chatroom. This creamy all-natural highlighter uses coconut oil, vitamin E and castor seed oil to give you an enviable glow. To double the glow on my cheekbones I layer it with Sunday Riley’s Auto Correct Brightening and Depuffing Eye Contour Cream.
Lip & Cheek
Mamma Char never fails and her latest launch is no exception. This multi-use cream can easily be tapped onto both the lip and cheek for a romantic rosy hue. “Are you blushing? Did you just get kissed? Why do you look so radiant” they all ask you over Zoom as you giggle and keep your compact out of sight.
Lip Jelly
“All the boys keep jockin, they chase me after (virtual) school.” Lil’ Mama knew what she was doing as she educated us about the importance of lip gloss. But let me introduce you to something one step better, lip jelly. It provides the shine of a gloss, the comfort of a lip balm, a pop of color, AND is not sticky! This moisturizing lip jelly from Tower 28 comes in 6 translucent shades that are formulated with nourishing oils to soothe and protect lips.
